THEATRE SCHOOLS

Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA) is a prestigious art university for performing art talents in China. It was formerly the Shanghai Municipal Experimental Theatre School, which was established on December 1st, 1945. In 1956 the school was officially renamed Shanghai Theatre Academy. In 2002, STA became a comprehensive art university with the disciplines of theatre, traditional Chinese opera, dance, film & TV, and the education spectrum covered vocational secondary school, bachelor, master and doctor programs.

There are more than 500 full-time employees at Shanghai Theatre Academy, including over 300 teachers. STA has over 2100 undergraduate students in 17 majors, as well as over 900 postgraduate students on campus.

There are four STA campuses with distinct functions. The Huashan Campus is the theatre arts education centre. The Lianhua Campus is the traditional Chinese opera education centre; the Hongqiao Campus is the international dance education centre; the Changlin Campus is the film, TV and new media education centre. In STA there are 10 educational units, including the Acting Department, Directing Department, Dramatic Literature Department, Stage Design Department, College of Chinese Opera, College of Dance, College of Film, College of Creative Studies, Division of Humanities and Social Sciences Education, and the College of Continuing Education. Besides, there are two vocational secondary schools affiliated to STA - the Chinese Opera School and the Dance School.

The Faculty of Dramatic Arts is a leading academic institution of higher education in theater, film, radio and television in Serbia. With its long tradition of productive creativity, quality study programs, eminent professors and exceptional study conditions, the Faculty is a distinguished educational, artistic and cultural institution. The Faculty of Dramatic Arts is financed by the government of Serbia.

The aims of the Faculty are: discovering and educating talents, fostering students' creative and intellectual potentials, promotion of free expression of ideas, development of artistic, theoretical, managerial and cultural disciplines, studying and life-long learning.

The Faculty has ten graduate studies and ten master studies: Acting (4+1), Theater and radio directing (4+1), Dramaturgy (4+1), Management and production in theater, radio and culture (4+1), Film and TV directing (4+1), Film and TV production (4+1), Camera (4+1), Editing (4+1), Sound recording and design (4+1), and  Visual effects, animation and game art (4+1) and Department for Theory and History.

The Faculty also organizes PhD studies: three years Art studies in dramatic audio-visual art, three years scientific studies of the Theory of the dramatic arts, Media and Culture and three years scientific studies of Management, Culture and Media.

Faculty of Dramatic Arts participated in some of the most important national, but also international theatre festivals: Festival d’Avignon; Sterijino Pozorje in Novi Sad; festival “Days of Little Things”, Trebinje, BiH; International Francophone Theater for Students in Poznan, Poland; International Festival of Youth Arts “Via Pontica” in Balchik, Bulgaria; International Theatre Forum in Lituania; The International Theatre Schools Festival in Suceava, Romania; Festival Setkáni in Brno, Czech Republic; International festival of student theatre in Besançon, France; Festival of Actors Academy in Rijeka, Croatia; SKOMRAHI - International Meeting of Students of the Faculties and Academies of Dramatic Arts in Skopje, North Macedonia; festival „Singing mask“ and festival „ArtОкраина“ in Saint Petersburg; VGIK festival, in Moscow;  CUT festival – University Theatre Center of Trieste, Italy; International Young Theater Directors Festival in Craiova,  International  Theatre School  Festival in Bucharest and Studio Festival  in Târgu Mureş, Romania; FUGA festival in Kopar, Slovenia.

In 2023 the Faculty of Dramatic Arts celebrates 75 years since it's been established. During seven decades, the FDA became recognizable, authentic, credible educational institution and achieved reputation of the most distinguished art school in the region. Since its  first days until the present times, FDA's departments, successfully participated in the competitive and complex arts, cultural and media landscape, innovated and improved it's courses, keeping it in line with the most progressive, theoretical and practical, developments in the field.  FDA's results, if measured by prizes, theatre productions, students' movies, published books, organized conferences and relevant science projects, would be another proof of our ambitions successfully transformed into real life. Our future steps will be focused on digital and virtual, on convergence between traditional and modern, on keeping our legacy intact while making it more visible and more relevant for the dynamic arts, culture and media market.

Mikhail Shchepkin Higher Theatre School associated with the State Academic Maly Theatre of Russia is the oldest drama school in Moscow. Its history goes back to the drama school officially founded by Emperor Alexander The First on December 28, 1809.

The School is famous for its great faculty members: M. S. Shchepkin, A. P. Lensky, V. N. Pashennaya, I. Ya. Sudakov, K. A. Zubov, V. I. Tsygankov, L. I. Deikun, L. A. Volkov, M. I. Tsaryov, M. O. Knebel, A. D. Diky, N. N. Afonin, V. P. Seleznyov.

The school is renowned for its methods in training national talents. Starting from the first intake of the Yakut studio in 1950, to date the School has trained over 50 national studios. The school is a forge of national personnel for the CIS, its authoritative, reliable partner in the development of national dramatic art.

The school maintains cooperation with drama schools and academies across the globe. In recent years, its teachers have given master classes and staged plays in Germany, Korea, Japan, USA and France.

Russian Institute of Theatre Arts – GITIS – is rightfully considered  not only the largest European drama school, but also one of the most distinguished both inside the country and abroad.

Since its foundation in 1878, GITIS has been constantly developing. Today it trains professionals in all areas of performing arts: drama acting, set design, stage directing, musical, ballet, variety theatre, theatre studies, and producing.

GITIS has a long history, a well-deserved reputation. By cooperating with foreign schools and enrolling students from other countries, the Institute strives at creating an international student theatre based on the unique traditions of Russian dramatic art.

The Moscow Art Theatre School opened in 1943. The driving force behind its creation was Vladimir Ivanovich Nemirovich-Danchenko, one of the founders of the Moscow Art Theatre. On the 21st of March, 1943 the management of MKhAT gathered at his apartment: "I’ve invited you to talk about the school." The idea that he proposed was in fact the last will of the great director and pedagogue: Nemirovich-Danchenko died on the 25th of April. The next day a special resolution of the Council of People's Commissioners of Russia was published, which contained a clause relating to the creation of the studio school with the Art Theatre named after him.

The first students were enrolled in the Acting course at Mоscow Art Theatre School in the summer of 1943 on the premises of the Moscow Art Theatre, in the ground-floor hall. Its great "Founding Fathers" – Moskvin, Kachalov, Knipper-Chekhova – sat at a long table, as examiners. The basis of the training at the School was Stanislavsky's system, aimed at fostering in the future actor a keen sense of a vibrant life on stage, the verisimilitude of natural acting and inspired mastery. The atmosphere was filled with daily and hourly sucking in of the essence of acting, not only in the acting classes, but in all classes and lectures as well. There were meetings with writers and great artists, among others Knipper-Chekhova, Pasternak and Akhmatova, Richter and Ehrenburg...

A large number of international contacts, theatrical collaborations, interdisciplinary laboratories and the hands-on participation in the life of modern theatre help the Moscow Art Theatre School  to keep updated on the new trends and events in the contemporary theatrical process.

The Institute of Contemporary Art was created in 1992. In 2022 our Institute celebrated its 30th anniversary. During the last 7 years the Federal Education and Science Supervision Agency has considered our Institute an effective higher educational institution of  Russia 5 times.
